Question by shortgilly: Where might I find divorce records from Plumas County, California c. 1859?
Preferably a free online resource, but I’m happy with anything that gets me to the records. I have the names of the parties and the date of petition.

Some background on the formation of the county. Your records should be in either Quincy or Susanville, which is Lassen county.
Email me the names you are looking for…I lived in Lassen county for many years, have that county history, and may be of help to you.

from Lassen county genweb…
In 1856, Isaac Roop and Peter Lassen led a group of disgruntled settlers, who were unhappy over efforts of Plumas County, California officials to levy and collect taxes in the isolated and sparsely-populated region in and around Susanville. At the same time, those settlers were equally unwilling to be considered a part of the Territory of Utah – a vast region that included parts of what were to become several western states. Roop, Lassen, and their followers opted to form a separate territory, which they named Nataqua.
The short-lived Republic of Nataqua was largely ignored, since the region affected had but a few hundred settlers. When the Territory of Nevada was established in 1861, Isaac Roop was made governor of the Territory. A few years later, surveys of the area established that Susanville was actually a part of the State of California and the County of Lassen was established in 1864.
You have a real tricky time frame to be working with.

“normal” county sources would generally be accurate, except in this unique locality, both the county and even state/territory were hotly disputed in this exact time. Fairfields History has extensive info, especially relating to some who could have been in Plumas in 1859 yet are considered pioneers of Lassen (which was created in the next few years).
Whether they do or don’t happen to survive and be in Quincy…PLEASE do not neglect to send me a message.
